Whether it’s snack time or meal time, I can’t help but crave a little savory crunch. I’ve long had a somewhat guilty obsession with salty snacks, and crackers are my chip of choice. They’re the perfect vehicle for hummus, cheese or simply by the handful.
But I’ve found it can be easy to absent-mindedly munch away without thinking about what’s IN the crackers we all love. So many options are overly processed and filled with preservatives, artificial ingredients and colors. Because of this, I was on a mission to make a homemade cracker recipe that is both delicious and nutritious.
These healthy crackers are so simple to whip up, I was truly shocked. Just three ingredients–almond flour, ground flaxseed and water (plus a few spices, of course)–and you’re in business.
For the batch pictured, I used Italian seasoning and garlic powder for one half and Trader Joe’s Everything But the Bagel Seasoning on the other. Because the initial ingredients are simple, the options for additional spices are endless. Or you can keep it simple and enjoy them in their slightly salty, unadulterated form.
The almond flour not only makes these crackers gluten-free, but it also adds a buttery texture that’ll trick you into thinking they’re much more indulgent. And of course, no one wants a wimpy cracker, so I made sure they could hold up to the amount of hummus I intended them to carry . The final product has the perfect balance of crunch and mouthwatering richness.
Moral of the story? I don’t plan on kicking about my salty snack addiction any time soon. Yet I’ve found that creating my own, healthy alternative is the best of both worlds. While I promise you that these simple crackers are lightyears more nutritious than traditional store-bought, I can’t guarantee you’ll be able to stay out of them!
- 2 cups almond flour
- 6 tbsp water
- 2 tbsp ground flaxseed
- 1 tsp pink Himalayan salt (or fine sea salt)
- spices of your choice for topping
*Note* Try to keep the dough in a rectangular shape for ease of cutting, but don't worry, the edges won't be perfect!
*Note* The edges will brown more quickly than the crackers in the center, so keep an eye on them. You'll need to remove the finished crackers and put the remaining back in the oven.
Store in an air-tight container or bag. Enjoy!
