Back to School Brain Boosters

lifestyle wellness Mar 18, 2019

To be honest, I’m a major nerd. I adore everything about school–finding the best corner in the library to study, walking around a beautiful campus, the feeling of accomplishment going into a test knowing you actually prepared. That’s why when I graduated undergrad from Wake Forest University last May, I felt a little part of myself leave as I drove away after graduation. I entered my first job in the “real world,” and if I said the adjustment was easy, I’d be lying.

After spending 6 months working, I finally gave into the voice that had been in the back of my mind for much too long. I decided to take the leap and return to school and pursue my Masters of Business Administration. I couldn’t be more excited to be a nerd once again.

Because I’ve been out of school mode for a bit, I’ve researched the best brain-boosters to incorporate into my diet, so I’m ready to hit the books. Below are my top picks for foods and supplements to naturally improve memory, focus and energy that’ll prepare you to take on whatever school, work or life may throw your way!

Omega 3-Rich Foods — Thank GOD for healthy fats! Walnuts, avocados, olive oil, flaxseeds and eggs are all fantastic and easy ways to add more Omega 3 fatty acids into your diet. But certain fish such as salmon, tuna, herring and cod are by far the most powerful sources.

Coffee & Tea — The antioxidants and caffeine in both coffee and tea increase alertness, concentration and even lift mood! Green tea specifically contains an amino acid called L-theanine which promotes relaxation to combat over-caffeination.

Turmeric — Curcumin is the active compound in this colorful spice and has been seen to improve the health and growth of brain cells. Plus, research shows it might even help to combat Alzheimer’s. Turmeric is an easy way to add brain boosting flavor to any dish.

Greens — Dark, leafy greens like kale contain glucosinolates, which produce compounds when broken down that may reduce oxidative stress and the risk of neurodegenerative diseases. Other green veggies that contain this element include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, bok choy and cabbage.

Berries — These sweet and tart treats are full of antioxidants which protect the brain against environmental damage. Recent studies show that berries likewise improve motor skills and cognition. Plus, they fight brain aging to make you feel young from the inside-out!

Other Essential Add-Ins:

Brain Octane Oil — I add Bulletproof’s Brain Octane Oil into my coffee daily, and I’m a firm believer in its benefits. It’s 100% caprylic acid triglycerides harvested from the most potent part of the coconut. It’s proven to give a long lasting boost of brain power and increase energy levels throughout the day.

BrainGain — This daily supplement contains berberine, biotin, folinic acid, hydroxytyrosol, luteolin, olive oil and selenium. Together, these compounds improve cognitive function, mental sharpness and harmony within the mind and body.

Spark — In an effort to drink more water, I’ve found Spark has been the key. With caffeine for a morning boost and 20 vitamins, minerals and nutrients, this water enhancer provides much more than taste alone to your bottle of H2O. The B-vitamins and neuroactive ingredients promote focus and mental alertness.
