German Chocolate Cake Balls

recipes snacks sweets Oct 28, 2020

My absolute favorite treat to whip up for anyone and everyone’s birthday is my famous Birthday Cake Bliss Balls as they’re incredibly delicious and always a crowd favorite. I even have a Cooking With G and Sammy P video dedicated to this favorite recipe.

But when I began thinking about my own birthday this year, I wanted to get a little creative with a different flavor of these easy celebratory treats. Since I was little, chocolate has always been my go-to sweet, and I’m obsessed with anything that involves nuts and coconut, so German Chocolate Cake is just a natural favorite.

These chewy, decadent bites provide all the goodness of cake without any baking in site. Which is the beauty of all of my energy and protein balls!

This particular recipe is very reminiscent of the Fudgey Date Energy Balls on my site, which are another great snack or evening treat I love to have on hand at all times. Both are naturally sweetened and satisfy that chocolate craving in the best way.

And like most of these creations, cacao powder is the star as it provides all the chocolate-y goodness without any of the added sugar or other ingredients often found in cocoa powder.

Plus, cacao powder provides a punch of antioxidants, iron, calcium, beta-carotene and magnesium to support immune health, benefit digestion, boost cognitive performance and more.

I personally use and recommend Karen Berrios Superfoods when choosing a brand as the quality is unmatched. You can use code GOODNESSWITHG for 20% off. This brand also makes my favorite cacao nibs used for topping these German Chocolate Cake Balls with a little crunch!

As for the chocolate protein powder, I’ve been using and loving the Kasvi powder from Almeda Labs as it’s filled with superfoods and adaptogens (plus, it’s just so dang tasty). You can also use code GOODNESSWITHG for 10% off if you’d like to give it a try yourself.

Another key element of any good German Chocolate creation, of course, is coconut, which also happens to be another one of my all-time favorite foods. Not only does it add great flavor and texture to these bites, but it also provides digestion-benefitting fiber as well as heart-healthy fats. A win-win, that’s for sure.

Also be sure to read more about why I swear by coconut for inner wellness and outer beauty in my 12 Beauty Foods for Skin & Hair Health post!

Last, but not least in the German Chocolate triad is pecans – one of the ultimate fall staples and one I use frequently, if you haven’t quite caught on yet  . For the full lowdown on why they’re also a super nutritious addition to this and many more of my recipes, take a peek at Why I’m Nuts About Nuts (& You Should be Too).

While all of the above are amazing on their own accord, together they’re simply a taste sensation. And no need for tons of additional sugar or other questionable ingredients in this version. Dates provide the perfect sweetness not to mention a healthy punch of vitamins and minerals, fiber and antioxidants. And they’re just so dang tasty and a keep these treats refined sugar free!

These balls the perfect superfood-packed afternoon snack, pre-workout fuel or evening sweet treat that always hits the spot. Be sure to leave a comment or give me a shout on Instagram @goodness_with_g if you give these babies a go  .
